At USN we work on the most interesting projects around, from major banks to space travel. Our engineers work in places where technology genuinely matters.

We’re migrating tens of terabytes to the latest versions of Oracle at a major bank in Den Bosch.
At an international financial institution, we’re building applications responsible for processing €500 billion of corporate loans a year.
For six years, our specialists have kept a robust Linux infrastructure running for international police and investigation services. Security above all — and yes, we got there. With Puppet.
For a Dutch social insurance organisation, we manage the network and the Linux servers, with automation at the core.
At a university, we’re supporting the rollout of a scalable Ansible environment so the IT teams can carry on independently.
Public transport runs on open source too. At a large transport operator in the Randstad, we provide a managed infrastructure built on Linux Red Hat, Device Edge, Satellite and OpenShift among others, all intelligently automated with clean Ansible code.
Then there are the projects where we’re building one of the largest Linux environments in the world, both remotely and on site, including in The Hague. Sophisticated scripts and tooling keep data centres running across three continents.
In the oil and gas industry, we make sure patching and updates run in a structured, automated way, so everything keeps running without surprises.
We work in aviation as well, building a stable Linux infrastructure for a training environment that prepares the next generation of air traffic controllers.
And in space? We manage systems that support astrophysicists developing applications to explore the universe.

Our business, and therefore the company, rests above all on trust. You don’t hand a job worth billions to the first engineer who comes along. Only the best can take that on. And the most likeable. Rob

“Director, coffee maker and glue of the group.”

He calls himself a colleague, but he’s a director. Everyone at USN is equal; there’s no need to be formal with anyone. Rob has a lot of patience and is sociable and empathetic. He enjoys interviewing new engineers, and that will include you, because he genuinely likes hearing their stories and what drives them. You’ll be offered a cup of coffee during your interview, of course.

The USN office shouldn’t feel like an office at all. That’s why there’s a sofa, games consoles and everything else engineers enjoy. It makes the workplace somewhere anything can be discussed, where we help and encourage each other, and where there’s always room to ask questions. Just as there was in 1991.

Fun facts: Rob does everything by bike; he got rid of his car six years ago. He plays in goal twice a week and naturally tries to run the pitch while he’s there. He’s fascinated by flight simulators — though actual flying isn’t for him. He’s afraid of it.

Rogier

“Second in command, and everything else twice over.”

Rogier loves the number two and likes doing everything in pairs. He has two cats to look after. He loves both playing football and supporting football. And it carries into his work as well. Not that he does the job twice, but he does hold two roles in one person: experienced, seasoned Linux engineer and, more recently, manager. He draws up quotations for projects, carries them out, provides guidance, sits down with clients, and plays a significant role on the contract staffing side. He translates client requirements into technical terms and back again. Rogier is deeply rooted in technology, so he talks easily with our clients’ engineers and architects.

Joining USN as a new colleague? Rogier is the one who’ll work out with you which assignment suits you, and who you can talk shop with. For our clients he’s a real asset, because he understands both worlds: theirs and yours, as part of USN.

Fun facts: when it comes to sport, Rogier couldn’t settle for just two and went for three. He plays padel, runs and plays football. Ask someone from Arnhem a question and you can expect a straight answer, and Rogier is no exception. Always warm and sociable with it, though — two more words that describe this friendly man well.

Harry

“Some need a nudge, others a pat on the back.”

Harry doesn’t anger easily; the only place he reaches boiling point is the kitchen. But at work, as a manager, he has an unerring sense of which ingredients the team needs. One person gets a nudge, another a pat on the back. He built up more than 20 years of IT experience in large organisations, and he knows that a manager can’t coach everyone the same way. He’ll manage you in the way that suits you. “Things get done better by people who want to do them than by people who have to.” He understands what you need as an engineer better than most.

He’s always up for a joke, but he takes the work seriously. Talk to Harry and you needn’t worry it’ll be all business. He’s far too empathetic for that, which shows in the size of his network.
