HTM (Haagsche Tramweg Maatschappij) has taken an innovative step towards the future of public transport in The Hague, together with Unix Support Nederland (USN) and Red Hat. By implementing edge technology in its trams and buses, HTM has created a flexible, future-proof digital infrastructure. Red Hat Device Edge and the Ansible Automation Platform give the fleet greater reliability and efficiency, and also make cost-effective, secure operation possible. The project allows HTM to respond more quickly and more flexibly to the operational demands of the modern mobility sector.

About the project

HTM wanted to do more than switch to electric vehicles. It also wanted a digital infrastructure that would keep the fleet flexible and future-proof. That led to the decision to implement Red Hat Device Edge and the Ansible Automation Platform in the vehicles’ onboard computers. These technologies reduce dependence on mobile networks, make updates more efficient and improve overall system stability, all of which is essential for a reliable passenger experience.

USN was brought in to handle the technical implementation, with the goal of improving operational processes and minimising manual work, resulting in a more robust and more secure solution for HTM.

Results

The project delivered significant benefits for HTM:
